How to clean black marks from white sole edges

Dark lines on a light sole edge may be surface transfer or actual damage. If the edge is painted or you are unsure of its material, check the maker’s care instructions first.

Clean the edge gently

Brush away dry dust with a soft brush. Lightly dampen a cloth; if the maker permits soap, add a little mild soap. Test on an inconspicuous spot first, then gently wipe only the sole edge. Avoid soaking the leather upper or the joints.

If the mark remains

Remove soap with a clean, slightly damp cloth and let the shoes dry at room temperature away from radiators. Avoid acetone, bleach and abrasive tools, which can damage finishes or bonded seams. A gouge will not wash away; ask a shoe repairer if unsure.
