What length shoelaces do your trainers need? Measure before replacing

A shoe size or six eyelet pairs cannot give one exact lace length. The gap between the sides, your instep and your lacing pattern all affect the result. Start with a lace that already works well in your own pair.

Measure your original lace

  1. Photograph the lacing, then remove one complete lace.
  2. Lay it straight on a table without stretching it.
  3. Measure from tip to tip, including both aglets.
  4. Note the width, flat or round shape and the eyelet pairs you use.

If the bow was comfortable, choose the same length. Assess any excess while wearing the trainer before deciding on a shorter replacement. Cutting first can leave fraying ends that are difficult to thread.

No old lace to measure?

Thread a longer spare of similar thickness in your usual pattern. Put the shoe on, adjust comfortably and tie a bow. Mark the required ends, remove the lace and measure it. Eyelet charts give only a starting estimate; count opposing holes as pairs.

Check before walking

The ends should stay clear of the sole, with enough lace to tie and undo easily. Longer laces cannot create room in a shoe that is too narrow or short.
