High instep or fuller feet? Choosing comfortable barefoot shoes

Many people focus mainly on length when choosing shoes, but foot height and volume matter too. With a higher instep or fuller feet, a size that looks right on paper may still feel uncomfortable. The issue may not be length, but how the upper fits over the top of the foot.
What may suggest too little room over the instep?
- the upper presses on your foot,
- the lacing area feels too tight,
- you feel pressure over the instep after longer wear,
- the shoe rubs at the sides or on top,
- your toes have room, yet the rest of your foot feels squeezed.
What might help?
A suitable shape
Not every barefoot model is the same. The shoe needs to suit your foot not only in length and width, but also in height and internal volume.
Adjustable lacing
Lace-up models often make it easier to fine-tune the fit.
Do not automatically choose a larger size
A larger size makes the shoe longer, but may not solve a lack of room over the instep.
Why does the overall fit matter?
Pressure from the upper can make the whole wearing experience less pleasant. A well-fitting barefoot shoe offers toe room and suitable volume for the rest of the foot.
What should you check when trying shoes on?
Try them in the afternoon or evening, when your feet may be fuller. Notice how the instep feels while standing, walking and after a few minutes.
