Returning to barefoot shoes in spring: how to restart after winter

Many people bring out their barefoot shoes again in spring. During colder months they often wear thicker, more enclosed and stiffer footwear, so feet and ankles may need time to get used to the change again.
Why avoid a sudden restart?
Even if you wore barefoot shoes often last year, winter may have changed the load on your feet and your daily movement. A gradual return matters in spring too.
How can you start?
With shorter walks
The original example of 15–20 minutes is not a required starting dose. Even that may be too much; start with less according to comfort and rest as needed.
By alternating footwear
You do not need to spend the whole day in barefoot shoes straight away.
With gentle ankle movement
If comfortable, you can include a few minutes of gentle movement within a pain-free range. This does not replace a gradual return; stop if it hurts.
What should you consider in spring?
Changing weather, different surfaces and the often sudden increase in daily activity. More walks, errands and outdoor plans can add up to a greater load.
Why can spring encourage a return?
Longer days and milder weather invite more time outdoors. If you build activity gradually according to your response, barefoot shoes can become part of everyday life again.
