Standing all day at work? Looking after your feet and arches
As a teacher, shop assistant, hairdresser, healthcare worker or warehouse employee, your feet literally work all day. What matters is not only how soft the shoe is, but also how much it allows the foot to move naturally. Shoes that are too stiff, narrow or unstable can leave you feeling very tired by evening. If your workplace requires safety footwear, follow its rules.
Why do the feet get so tired?
During standing work, the feet constantly stabilise the body. If the shoes squeeze the toes, body weight shifts forwards or the sole restricts the foot’s natural function, the muscles may tire more quickly.
What should you look for in shoes?
Enough room at the front
The toes need space. This may improve the sense of balance and help you stand more steadily.
Avoid excessive stiffness
The foot does not just carry you; it constantly responds. A shoe that is too stiff limits this natural function.
A secure fit matters
The shoe should neither feel loose nor squeeze. A stable heel area and a good fit matter throughout the day.
What can you do during work?
Even 1–2 minutes each hour may help. Rise onto your toes, roll through your feet and move your ankles. If it is suitable for you, safe and permitted at work, take a few barefoot or socked steps during a break. In the evening, raising your feet, a short sole massage and moving the calves may feel welcome.
Who may find this especially useful?
People whose feet feel heavy, swollen and tired by evening, or who often feel tension in their arches. A more comfortable shape and more natural distribution of load may make a difference in these situations.
