Barefoot shoes slipping on ice? Check grip and traction

Winter footwear can slip on ice. Neither the barefoot label nor a tread pattern guarantees traction on smooth ice. Check the conditions and your own needs before setting out.
Inspect the outsole
Remove trapped snow and dirt in accordance with the shoe care instructions. Wear or damage can affect contact with the ground. Ask the maker or a cobbler if unsure; do not cut or alter the sole yourself.
Consider removable traction aids
For icy routes, consider devices intended for ice. Follow the instructions for both the shoes and the device: it must fit the actual shoe securely without shifting. Inspect it before use. It does not replace mountaineering equipment or eliminate the risk of falling.
Adapt to the surface
Choose treated paths, take shorter steps and use handrails. Metal studs can be slippery on hard indoor flooring: follow the device instructions and remove them before entering when required. Postpone the trip if conditions are unsafe.
