Child refuses to wear slippers: five fit problems to check

Refusing slippers is not always a matter of preference. A child may feel pressure, heat or insecurity while walking but struggle to explain it. Look for a cause before ordering another pair.

Five things to check

  1. Measure both feet and compare with the size table.
  2. After brief wear, check toes, heel and instep for marks.
  3. Look for a firm seam or a strap over a sensitive spot.
  4. Check whether socks or slippers feel damp or too warm.
  5. Consider whether the pair suits the floor and the child’s play.

Ask specific questions: “Does it hurt by your big toe, heel or on top?” A younger child may point. Compare how they move in another pair and barefoot on a safe floor. Do not force them to break in painful slippers.

If the shape is wrong, choose children’s slippers by measurements and shape, not colour alone. Seek medical advice for pain, swelling or a change in walking.
