How to teach a child to put on and fasten slippers independently

Child putting on indoor slippers independently

Putting on slippers is easier when the pair fits and opens wide enough. A low stable seat, enough time and an age-appropriate fastening all help.

Practise one step at a time

  1. Place the slippers in front of the child the right way round. An inside mark can help distinguish left and right.
  2. Ask the child to sit and open the fastening fully.
  3. Slide in the toes, then settle the heel. The foot should not need to be forced.
  4. Fasten the strap so the slipper holds without pressing on the instep.
  5. Stand up and take a few steps.

Practise at home without a hurried morning. If it remains difficult, the opening may be narrow or the fastening too complicated for the child’s current skills.
