Velcro, elastic or laces: choosing children’s slipper fastenings

A fastening should keep the slipper on the foot and be manageable for the child who wears it. This matters at nursery, where children are often asked to change shoes themselves.
What changes with each type?
Hook-and-loop straps are quick to adjust. Check that they still hold when loosened over a high instep. Elastic makes putting slippers on easier but usually allows less precise adjustment. Laces can be adjusted well, provided the child or adult can tie them securely.
Test an ordinary day’s movement
- Ask the child to put on and fasten the slippers, if age permits.
- Let them walk, turn, squat and stand again.
- Check heel hold and any pressure across the instep.
- Have them remove and put the pair on once more.
If the heel slips, do not tighten a strap until it hurts. Look for a different shape. Check length in the size table and compare the fastening photos in our kids’ slippers collection.
