Open or closed heels on children’s slippers: which works best?

Open and closed heel slipper shapes

The better heel shape depends on where the child wears the slipper and how it stays on during movement. An open heel can be easy to slip on; a closed heel wraps around the back of the foot. Neither works for every child.

At nursery and during active play

Watch for slippers coming off when the child runs or changes direction. A closed heel and suitable fastening may help, but they must not pinch or make dressing difficult. Check your nursery’s footwear rules too.

For quieter use at home

An open design may be convenient. It should still stay on during normal walking. If your child curls their toes to grip it or steps out of it, the fit is poor.

Compare length in the size table and let the child walk on an ordinary indoor floor. Children with a narrow heel need particular attention to heel hold. Compare the shapes in our children’s slippers range.
