Bare feet, grippy socks or slippers at home for children?

Child’s feet and indoor footwear on a home floor

There is no single footwear choice for every child at home. Cleanliness, temperature, floor surface and activity matter. Watch how your child moves in each option.

When bare feet can work

A warm, clean and safe floor may be comfortable for bare feet. Remove sharp objects and check that your child is neither cold nor slipping.

When grippy socks can help

Grippy socks can suit a cooler floor. They should not squeeze the toes, and the grip dots should not be worn away. Some smooth surfaces can still be slippery.

When to choose slippers

On a colder or rougher floor, or during active play, slippers may protect the foot. They need an appropriate size, toe room and a sole suited to the surface. See our children’s slippers and check the size table before buying.

If your child has pain, repeated falls or individual guidance from a clinician, follow that professional’s advice.
