Joint hypermobility in children: choosing suitable shoes

Children playing outdoors

Joint hypermobility in children means that their joints have a greater range of movement than usual. It is sometimes described as having “bendy joints”. This does not necessarily mean there is an illness, but some children may experience tiredness or difficulty with movement. When choosing shoes, consider how well they fit and the support your child needs.

Possible signs of joint hypermobility

  • A greater range of movement in the fingers, knees or elbows.
  • A less stable standing posture or getting tired more quickly when standing.
  • Differences in the position of the ankles or knees, which a professional can assess if they are causing difficulties.

The way a child stands or how flexible their joints are is not enough on its own to establish a diagnosis. If your child has recurring joint pain, frequent injuries or difficulties that limit movement, speak to their doctor.

What to consider when choosing children's shoes

  • The right size and width: toes need room without being squeezed.
  • A secure fit: the fastening should allow you to adjust the shoe so that the foot does not slide around unnecessarily.
  • A sole with good grip and appropriate support: the level of support needed depends on your child's difficulties. Neither maximum softness nor maximum stiffness is a universal rule.

If joint hypermobility is causing difficulties, ask a professional about suitable footwear. Barefoot shoes and any particular type of sole are not a universal solution for every child.

Supporting movement

A physiotherapist may recommend games and exercises to help with ankle stability, foot muscles and coordination, according to your child's needs. Choosing shoes does not replace this individual advice.

Does my child need special orthopaedic shoes?

Not automatically. It depends on their difficulties, movement and how their shoes fit. The appropriate healthcare professional can assess whether special footwear or insoles are needed.
