Sneakers rubbing your ankle? Check the collar and heel movement

Checking where a sneaker collar meets the ankle

A sneaker that rubs the ankle is not always a shoe that needs more breaking in. First locate the contact point and watch what happens to your heel as you walk.

Three quick fit checks

  1. Put on your usual socks and stand still. If the collar presses against the ankle bone before you move, its shape or height may be the issue.
  2. Walk a few steps. If the heel rises and the rubbing starts only in motion, check the laces and whether the shoe has too much room.
  3. Feel inside the collar and straighten the sock. A raised seam or bunched fabric can create one small pressure point even when the length seems right.

What to adjust

Adjust the laces until the heel stays in place without squeezing the top of your foot. Try new shoes briefly indoors; do not keep walking through a painful rub. Thicker socks cannot correct a collar that presses on the ankle bone while standing. Stop wearing the pair if skin is broken, and seek professional advice if pain persists.

For a new pair, compare your foot length with the size table , browse the barefoot sneakers and inspect an available example, Antal Amada Tea Green. Check the collar against your own ankle and make sure the heel remains settled when you walk.
