Stuck boot zip? Check the lining before pulling

A boot zip can catch on lining, dirt or a damaged tooth. Stop pulling when you feel resistance: extra force may make the problem worse.

Find the cause

If safe, take the boot off, loosen the laces and inspect both sides of the slider in good light. If lining or a sock is caught, release tension and gently move the fabric away. Try moving the slider slightly backwards only if it moves easily; never yank it.

Clean gently

Brush away dry sand and dust with a soft brush. Follow the footwear maker’s care guidance: oils, solvents and household lubricants can stain leather or lining. Do not squeeze the slider with pliers or use sharp tools.

When to seek repair

If teeth are missing, the zip separates behind the slider, the stitching is damaged or fabric stays firmly trapped, consult a cobbler. When putting boots on, loosen the laces first and pull the slider straight without sideways force.
