Water marks on leather shoes: what to do

Rain can leave darker patches or tide marks on leather. Water, dirt or salt may all be involved. Before cleaning, identify the material and check the manufacturer’s care instructions.
Let the shoes dry naturally
Blot moisture gently with a soft cloth without vigorous rubbing. Remove detachable insoles and dry them separately. Leave shoes at room temperature away from radiators and sunlight. Loose unprinted paper helps retain their shape; replace it when wet.
Treat the right type of leather
Smooth leather, nubuck and suede require different care. Once dry, gently brush away loose dust and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for further treatment. Test any product on a hidden area. Avoid vinegar, solvents and hard scrubbing. If marks persist or you cannot identify the finish, ask a specialist; complete removal is not guaranteed.
