Ingrown toenail in a child: can narrow shoes contribute?

A tight or narrow shoe can press on the edge of a toenail, but it is not the only possible cause of an ingrown nail. Nail cutting and injury can also matter. Do not try to solve a painful, red or swollen toe simply by buying longer shoes.
Check the footwear
- Is there adequate space ahead of the longest toe according to the size table?
- Does the toe box narrow at the big toe? Read more about toe-box shape.
- Does the upper press on the nail from above?
- Are socks too short or tight?
Set aside painful shoes and keep the foot clean and dry. Speak with a clinician if there is swelling, discharge, significant pain or worsening symptoms. Do not dig into the corner of the nail. Cambridge University Hospitals lists poorly fitting footwear among possible causes and advises cutting nails straight across, not too short.
After treatment, choose a suitable toe-box shape. Compare indoor children’s slippers if needed.
