Red marks from children’s shoes: where to check the fit

Checking a child’s foot for shoe pressure marks

A red mark shows where a shoe touches the foot, but does not by itself identify the cause. Notice whether it fades quickly, hurts or returns in the same place. Stop using a pair that causes blisters, broken skin or pain.

Where is the mark?

  • Toes or side of the forefoot: the shoe may be too narrow or poorly shaped. Read our guide to toe-box shape.
  • Top of the foot: check the upper, seams and fastening over the instep.
  • Heel: rubbing can result from a loose or overly tight heel.
  • Sole of the foot: inspect the insole, sock and any debris inside.

Change the child’s shoes, inspect both feet and measure them. Compare length with the size table, then look for a better shape. Contact a healthcare professional if pain, swelling or redness continues even without the shoes. Check seams and fastening range when comparing new children’s slippers.
